This is a Man’s World

Two Minute Hack

Found this while surfing youtube, a remix of corporate media news footage around the invasion of Iraq.

Harry Potter and the Brokeback Goblet

Another brokeback style movie trailer remix that “queers” mainstream straight culture. In this video the creator takes a queer negative movie (the Harry Potter franchise has no real queer themes or characters at all) and uses remix to create a positive queer relationship and storyline. Even so there is a fine line, in this emerging genre, between negatively making fun of queer culture and positively celebrating it.

Note: Above the word queer is used as a positive verb meaning to reevaluate or reinterpret a work with an eye to sexual orientation and/or gender.

G.W. Bush’s Downhill Jam

Aaron Valdez remixes a Nintendo wii TV commercial with footage of presidential speeches to create the illusion of a new video game where people can “play” George W Bush. See more of his work at valdezatron.com

Brokeback to the Future

Whether intentional or unintentional Chocolate Cake City has created an example of a political remix that queers mainstream straight culture. However even though the video tries to pull out subtle queer undertones in the Back to the Future movies it would be far more radical if it were to “queer” the misogynistic Buff character and not the two already somewhat oddball characters of Doc Brown and Marty McFly.

Note: Above the word queer is used as a positive verb meaning to reevaluate or reinterpret a work with an eye to sexual orientation and/or gender.

Lite Brite or Die Hard

A film trailer style remix of Die Hard movies mashed up with news footage of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Mooninites light box advertisement “IED scare” debocal in Boston this year. The parody poking fun at the “war on terror” induced massive overreaction from the police and city government is from Chocolate Cake City, a Boston based comedy troupe.

Heavy Artillery

A political remix combining video, stills, graphics, text and music. The video is by Pedro Inoue and Paula Carvalho with music by ML. Some of the footage looks to have been recycled by video recording a TV set to create a distorting effect.

####

Oh So Criminal

This remix was created by artist Keir Smith in response to the Australian Government’s Fair Use Exceptions Paper in May 2005. The video mash-up explicitly abuses the copyright of easily referenced popular culture audio and video icons in ways currently illgeal but that should be covered by ‘fair use’. Find out more about the video here.

War On Imagination

Here is a heavily layered video remix focusing on themes of information and culture created by someone calling themselves Xavier Society For The Blind. Also click here to see the sequel called War On Imagination II : Videodrone Attack.

Culture Jam (Just Do It)

A brief history of the culture jam, from Warhol to EBN from Craig Baldwin.
More of a “how to” than the other political remixes on this blog.

Chevy Tahoe Ad Parodies

Recently General Motors foolishly invited the public to create their own commercials for the 2007 Chevy Tahoe on its website. Users could select from a limited amount of rather ridiculous company stock footage clips, cheesy music and use a video text generation tool to compile their own tribute to the SUV. Not surprisingly GM also sought to limit distribution of the new ads to its tightly controlled website. Despite their efforts though some of the more mischievous creations have somehow found their way to youtube and other video sites. Because of the limited source material each primarily uses text to parody the brand with biting political and environmental messages. A classic bit of identity correction.

These are just a few of the literally dozens of anti-Tahoe ads all over the net, thanks to, well…Chevy.

The World of Survival

Here is more from Phil Patiris, this longer collection of biting masterful remixes from the early 90’s is called “The World of Survival”. It can be found as extra on the Negativland DVD “Sonic Outlaws”. (Some small clips from this video have been posted on this blog already a few months back under the heading Iraq Campaign 1991, which is a 19min remix film by Patiris).
