A political mash-up created by cutting together clips from various well known Disney animated features to illustrate the deeply embedded racism in those films. This is an example of fair use remix in a more educational video style.

My latest Identity Correction remix, this time taking aim at the Chevron corporation and their new rather Orwellian slogan “Human Energy”. Created by combining and re-cutting movie footage, TV commercials and the audio from Chevron’s latest PR blitz. The video focuses on the corporate search for profits through control of global oil supplies and the connection with aggressive American foreign policy.

A very disturbing remix from the video artist trio Wreck and Salvage. While not all of the collective’s work is political, this one definitely is. Titled “Club Iraq” because it combines rapper 50 Cent’s famous song “In Da Club” with audio of Bush’s invasion speech coupled with home videos taken by US soldiers in Iraq and posted on YouTube. The juxtaposition of the audio tracks and the armature footage US solders goofing off in a war zone, acting like immature boys and saying horrifically insensitive things to and about the Iraq population makes for a sickening, depressing yet poignant Political Remix Video. These troubling unflattering home videos and the thousands like them posted online are likely part of the reason the Military banned myspace and YouTube from its servers in 2007

I offer this warning before viewing, the clips of military personal use explicit language, imitate sexual acts with each other and will most likely make you feel at least slightly ill.

The recent outtake footage posted on YouTube called Bill O’Reilly Flips Out has spawned a torrent of remixes including this one by Torrey Meeks using music by RevoLucian. The remix takes the disturbing raw footage of O’Reilly’s angry rant on Inside Edition and re-cuts it to creates a dance mix. Interestingly the remixes have become so pervasive that it makes finding the original footage harder on YouTube. So in this case do the remixes, while really funny, distract and take away from the original clip, which is very poignant on its own? An interesting question. I do have to say this one is hilarious and any remix that can make us laugh out loud at the mess our country and media is in at the moment is a positive thing.

A remix targeting Coca Cola’s sponsorship of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay. It uses part of a Coke TV ad and combines it with footage of Chinese government brutality against people in Tibet. The video is part of the Coke Ad Jam Competition put on by Students for a Free Tibet and looks to be the only one that uses footage appropriated directly from a Coke commercial.

A stunning video remix illustration of Jeremiah Wright talking about the “chickens coming home to roost” critique of US foreign policy. Creator Diran Lyons use footage from both documentary films and hollywood blockbusters to add visuals to Wright’s words from the pulpit.

A video by Elisa Kreisinger that remixes presidential campaign promises over the past few decades and juxtaposes them with footage of people’s movements and protests on the streets.

This mash-up of mass media images from movies and TV was put together by the Media Education Foundation as part of a media criticism video called “Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity“. MEF is one of the few big organizations, that I have found, who rely heavily on the fair-use of corporate owned footage in their video projects. Below is the intro from that film mixed with a new beginning and ending message added by a youtube user.

I would love to find more Political Remix Videos like this one, that deal with race gender and sexuality in the media and our society as a whole. If anyone knows of others please forward the links.

An enlightening mash-up video project on the portrayal of masculinity in Disney animated movies by Sanjay Newton that appropriates footage from those films to illustrate narrated audio criticisms on the issue. This mash-up would fall into the category of educational remix so it has a very different feel than many of the other videos posted on this blog so far.

Another Star Wars themed remix found on youtube, this one taking the audio of Obi Won Kenobi’s famous monologue in A New Hope: Episode 4 where he explains The Empire to a young Luke Skywalker and mixing it with footage of the Bush Administration and it’s War in Iraq. Here also is another slightly different version of this mash-up.

One of many Star Wars themed Political Remix Videos, this one by Chris Campbell and uses the Star Wars movies combined with Fox News footage of the US invasion of Iraq and George Bush’s “State of the Union” speech to create a “Sate of the Empire”.

A remix from 1992 called Read My Lips attacking George H. W. Bush on a range of issues. It was shown on MTV during the American presidential election campaign of that year. Following the video is a discussion about the mash-up on the Bill Moyers PBS program also in 1992.

Another remix by ATMO films in their Read My Lips mashup series. In this one they carefully cut up and digitally manipulate George W Bush’s Iraq invasion speech to make him slowly lip sync to the voice of a hypnotist putting us, the viewers and public, to sleep. He asks us to “just let go”.

Unlike most of the other remixes posted here, which are made entirely of appropriated material, this video uses a combination of appropriated footage from corporate news segments cut with original footage shot for the purpose. I don’t often post political remixes videos about the 08 elections and especially never any that advertise a particular candidate. Though I will post remixes that are critical or parody the election process and institution of the presidency. However this remix of the recent “yes we can” Obama music video is worth a look. While highly critical of McCain the video does not overtly endorse any candidate and so fits on this blog.

My most recent political remix video created from tv commercials, blockbuster movies and news footage from Iraq and Afghanistan. The alternative title for this remix is “teaching our children”.

A TV movie trailer remix from video remixer Elisa Kreisinger created by mashing corporate media’s over sexualized depiction of women with the ad for the misogynistic horror flick Captivity.

Another anti-military recruitment ad done by laying a DIY voice track over the original visuals of the commercial. The video was created by an activist group from Grand Rapids to both send a message and also as self promotion, more and more grassroots groups are turning to remix of corporate messages in their activist campaigns.

This remix is a somewhat low quality visual telling of the 1848 Communist Manifesto using footage of American cartoon characters combined with DIY narration of the text for the audio. While I’m personally not a huge fan of Karl Marx, its a creative and subversive political remix.

WAR™ is a political remix by Michele Aquila that uses still photographs from the US invasion of Iraq coupled with familiar multinational corporate logos.

Here is one of the first political remixes I have found from 1942 called “General Adolph Takes Over”. Made by Universal Newsreel using material pirated from the famous nazi propaganda film “Triumph of the Will” than cut up, re-edited and set to the quirky British dance tune “The Lambeth Walk“. The short makes fun of the marching nazi soldiers, as well as Hitler making them look like wind-up dolls, dancing and skipping to the music.
